Intersections, Transitions, and Silenced Voices


The Communication Education Interest Group is dedicated to the advancement of the practical, pedagogical, methodological, and theoretical interests of its members. The Interest Group equally values its constituents' educational viewpoints and perspectives, which include K-12, community college, and four-year college and university educators. The Interest Group seeks to promote dialogue among its diverse members and other interest groups at CSCA.

Submissions for the upcoming conference should center around the theme of “Intersections, Transitions, and Silenced Voices.”.  Submissions that foreground the voices of marginalized groups and underrepresented scholars are especially welcomed.  Papers and panels should connect their submission to the overall conference theme or specifically consider topics related to the following questions:

  • How do we transition ‘public speaking’ from traditional, white-centered practices to more inclusive, reflective of actual societal culture?
  • What are we doing to make our rubrics more inclusive?
  • How is the intersection of cultural viewpoints impacting how we define and practice silence within our classrooms?
  • What resources are available that silence students/faculty from the margins? How might we find these or create ways to access these resources/ How do we amplify these voices and utilize them to make valuable changes in our communities?
  • What is the responsibility of the university in/for spaces of engagement?

We urge you to make submissions creative and push the boundaries of intersectionality, transitions and silencing.


 Submissions are limited to the formats described below. However, if you have an idea for an innovative panel format that is not outlined herein, contact the Communication Education Interest Group conference planner (Sarah LeBlanc; for authorization to submit an alternative format.

Paper Submissions.

Only completed papers will be accepted. Papers must include a title and brief abstract (<100 words). Paper length (excluding title page and abstract) should not exceed 30 pages. If accepted for presentation, each paper will be put onto a thematized panel with other papers, and the conference planner will assign a respondent and a chair.

Special Notes:

  • If the paper is authored solely by graduate and/or undergraduate students, the submitter should type “STUDENT” on the upper right-hand corner of the title page.
  • If the paper will be a graduate student debut paper (i.e., the student has never submitted to CSCA), please type “DEBUT STUDENT” on the upper right-hand corner of the title page. To be considered a graduate student debut paper, (1) the author must be a graduate student, (2) the paper must have single authorship, and (3) the paper must be the author’s first paper to be presented at CSCA if accepted.
  • If you would like your paper to be considered for the Inclusive Scholarship Award, type “INCLUSIVE SCHOLARSHIP” in the upper right-hand corner of the title page.
    • To be considered an exemplar of inclusive scholarship, the paper must demonstrate academic rigor in the examination of communication and historically marginalized communities/populations.

Discussion Panels Submissions.

Discussion panels are those including 4 - 7 panelists who provide a brief opening statement concerning a topic and then engage in discussion, often with the entire attending audience. These panels must have a chair to introduce the panelists and moderate the discussion.

Special Notes:

  • Preference will be given to those panelists representing multiple institutions rather than representing a single institution.
  • Submitters are encouraged to highlight in their proposals what other interest groups could co-sponsor the discussion (when applicable).
  • Discussion panel submissions must include the following: (a) title, (b) description (75 words or less), (c) rationale (that includes a complete list of participants along with their institutional affiliations, contact information, and brief abstracts for each paper or explanation of each participant’s purpose/perspective).


The Communication Education Interest Group offers three awards based upon reviewer evaluations of outstanding submissions.  Those awards include:

Top Competitive Paper (see “paper submissions” above);

Top Competitive Panel (see “discussion panel submissions” above); and,

Gustav Friedrich Award for top student competitive paper (student paper submitted within “paper submissions” above; accompanied by a $100 cash award).
