Borders & Breakthroughs

The Strategic and Applied Communication (formerly Public Relations) Interest Group of the Central States Communication Association (CSCA) invites competitive papers, paper panels, and discussion panel submissions for the 89th Annual Convention at Chicago, O’Hare, April 14-19, 2020. Submissions are encouraged to reflect on the theme of Borders and Breakthroughs. A border may divide but also call attention to interrelationships and crossovers. Breakthroughs transcend borders and create new possibilities for inquiry, teaching, learning, relating, and serving. See the conference planner’s call for more information on the theme for the conference.

The Strategic and Applied Communication Interest Group highlights scholarship and pedagogy dealing with issues, strategies, and teaching materials related to public relations and other strategic and applied communication scholarship. The Interest Group encourages members to engage students and each other in the study, analysis, evaluation, and participation in all types of strategic and applied communication activities. The Interest Group encourages networking and relationship building among students, faculty, and professionals in communication.

Faculty, students, independent researchers, and community members are all encouraged to submit and attend the convention. University and community partnerships are particularly welcome. Submissions inclusive of all methodological perspectives in the communication discipline are expected and embraced.

The Interest Group now recognizes a top student paper each year with the Dan Millar Top Student Paper Award, including a $50 prize for the student paper ranked first by the reviewers.

Multiple options are available for submissions. Papers: Only completed papers will be accepted. Papers must include a title and brief abstract. Student submissions should include the designation “STUDENT” on the upper right-hand corner of the title page. Paper panels and discussion panels may also be submitted. These panels must include a chair, but a respondent is not always necessary. All technology requests must be made at the time of submission. CSCA will attempt to make multi-media projectors available but there is no guarantee that one will be provided to your session.

The deadline for submissions is Friday, October 11, 2019, 11:59 p.m. CST. Submissions for CSCA 2020 will begin August 1, 2019. You will find a link to the AI submission system at: https://www.csca-net.org/aws/CSCA/pt/sp/callforpapers
