CSCA 2015 Convention - Health Communication Interest Group - Call for Submissions Reminder

Greetings,

The end of summer and beginning of the school year means one thing: The CSCA 2015 Convention Submission Deadline is rapidly approaching on October 3! I’m looking forward to receiving your submissions, so please make sure you sending in your competitive papers, panels and roundtable discussions following the guidelines in the call for submissions (see below). A couple of additional announcements regarding panel ideas:

Great Ideas for Teaching Health Communication: As discussed at April’s business meeting, we are assembling a panel to highlight teaching ideas and activities for Health Communication Courses. Submissions for this panel should be no more than 2 pages, and should include the following components: Title of activity; Intended objective(s) of the activity; Rationale for conducting the activity; Description of the activity, including any preparation/preliminary steps and materials needed; Debriefing of the activity including typical results; Appraisal of the activity, including any limitations or variations; References and/or suggested readings. Please submit your teaching activities to Jenn Anderson by Sept 24 at Jennifer.Anderson@sdstate.edu.

Health Communication Interest Group Facebook Page: Have a terrific idea for a panel but still need a few like-minded scholars to help fill it out? Post it on our Interest Group’s Facebook page! We currently have 43 members (and counting!). Not a member of the page yet? Be sure to join us – and please invite others to be part of the group as well!

Looking forward to a great CSCA and seeing you all in 2015. Please don’t hesitate to get in contact with me if you have any questions or suggestions,

HEALTH COMMUNICATION INTEREST GROUP
Call for Papers and Panels

2015 Central States Communication Association (CSCA)
Annual Convention in Madison, WI
April 15-19, 2015

Convergence

The Health Communication Interest Group invites submissions of competitive papers, programs, and panels to be considered for programming at the 2015 CSCA conference to be held in Madison, Wisconsin.

Our interest group focuses on how health and well-being are embodied, expressed, and promoted through diverse communicative practices. We value scholarship from an array of research traditions. Moreover, we support research examining the communication between providers and receivers of care, development of health campaigns, promotion of ethics, and effects of media, popular culture, and technology on health.

All topics related to health communication are welcomed, especially those focusing on the convention theme, Convergence. The theme invites scholars to consider questions for research, teaching, and practice, such as: How can various areas of communication (e.g., interpersonal, family, small group, organizational) converge to generate more holistic understandings of health, or better understand health across human lifespans? How is the confluence of legal and socioeconomic changes impacting the ways health care resources are organized and distributed among populations? How might we re-envision health communication scholarship as a nexus for building partnerships with practitioners and educators in medicine and public health? How is patient care being re-defined through the integration of Western and complementary alternative medical practices? How are ‘health’ and ‘well-being’ defined in public discourses and organizational practices, and what values do these conversations promote (or obscure) for self-care? Additionally, how is convergence reflected in the ways we teach health communication? These questions represent just a few of the many possibilities inspired by the conference theme.

A variety of formats are welcome, particularly those involving competitive papers, panels, and roundtable discussions. In terms of panels, preference will be given to submissions with panelists representing multiple institutions rather than representing a single institution. We also welcome undergraduate and graduate student submissions. Awards will be given to the top student competitive paper and top non-student competitive paper.

Guidelines for Submission:

Competitive Papers:

Panels: Discussion and paper panels must be submitted using the respective forms located on the CSCA website: www.csca-net.org.

Deadline: Submissions must be received by 11:59 pm on Friday, October 3, 2014.

An e-mail acknowledging the receipt of paper and panel proposals will be sent following each submission.
