There is still time to sign up for one of the TWO fantastic preconferences offered this year, both designed to communicate the possibilities of teaching and doing research. First, “The Pedagogical Possibilities within Autoethnographic Research,” is designed and facilitated by a stellar group of scholars (see description, below). In this workshop, we will explore the methodological foundations of authoethnographic (AE) research, discuss different approaches for crafting autoethnographies, and provide resources to help teach others the ways and benefits of using it as a research methodology. The second preconference, “It is Possible for YOUR Students to Do Research: Teaching Effective Communication Methods,” will examine how communication scholars are developmentally integrating research throughout the undergraduate curriculum to help students to better understand the research process. This preconference is facilitated by a group of extraordinary teacher-scholars. Plan to arrive in Kansas City early and get your conference off to a great start with a dynamic and engaging preconference. They are not to be missed!
“The Pedagogical Possibilities within Autoethnographic Research”
In this workshop, we will explore the methodological foundations of authoethnographic (AE) research, discuss different approaches for crafting autoethnographies, and provide resources to help teach others the ways and benefits of using it as a research methodology. Over the past several decades the reach and impact of autoethnography has grown significantly. Partly given its reflexive and narrative nature, autoethnography makes possible that which other forms of conventional inquiry may preclude. It provides a unique approach for examining communication and culture and, for some, an opportunity to enact cultural critique and reform. In this session, we seek to ask, and maybe answer, some of the following questions: What possibilities for communication pedagogy exist as a consequence of AE research? What are the creative and imaginative possibilities made available through AE praxis? How might we come to see communication, communicators, and our communicative culture differently, as a consequence of the creative and evocative work of autoethnograpy? Plan to attend, learn, participate, and engage in advancing the possibilities of authoethnographic research and pedagogy.

“It is Possible for YOUR Students to Do Research: Teaching Effective Communication Methods”
The capstone project or research methods class are often required across universities, many faculty have difficulty envisioning ways to integrate and empower undergraduates to understand the research process within their programs. A challenge facing many colleges and universities has been to find engaging ways to generate hands-on learning in the research process. This workshop will help undergraduate teachers become more effective using high impact learning strategies that prepare students for the complex challenges of today and unknown problems of tomorrow by teaching them how to complete a research project. As colleges and universities increasingly include research as an essential part of the undergraduate experience, faculty and administrators need to consider what can realistically be expected from students. This workshop will examine how communication scholars are developmentally integrating research throughout the undergraduate curriculum to help students to better understand the research process.
